Ultrasound Guided Dry Needling

This cutting-edge technique combines the benefits of dry needling with the accuracy of ultrasound

Are you struggling with persistent pain in your joints or muscles? Do you frequently find yourself suffering from painful headaches? Ultrasound-guided dry needling (UGDN) may be the drug-free, minimally invasive treatment technique you’re looking for. APEX Physical Therapy offers this state-of-the-art technique at our Brighton and Farmington Hills, MI physical therapy clinics.

Dry needling is a common physical therapy treatment that involves inserting thin, sterile needles through the skin and into the ligaments, tendons, or muscle tissue underneath, helping reduce pain and facilitate soft tissue recovery. Ultrasound-guided dry needling incorporates ultrasound technology to improve dry needling’s accuracy and effectiveness.

UGDN can treat a wide variety of conditions, ranging from migraines to mobility concerns.

What makes UGDN different from standard dry needling?

Ultrasound guided dry needling uses real-time imaging software to help the APEX Physical Therapy physical therapists target trigger points or other pain spots more accurately, leading to better results, faster recovery, and reduced nerve or blood vessel injury risk.

During your UGDN session, our physical therapists will help you get comfortable in the treatment room before using a handheld ultrasound probe to create an image of the affected area. From there, we’ll be able to begin the dry-needling procedure.

Because we’ll have an ultrasound picture, we can monitor the needle’s movement in real-time, allowing for higher accuracy. We’ll also be able to better adjust the needle to achieve the desired response in your soft tissue, such as muscle relaxation or movement.

While dry-needling with or without ultrasound is typically painless, you may feel discomfort or pressure during insertion. However, our therapists will work to ensure the process is as comfortable as possible.
